What identifying numbers are used for importing to the US?

When it comes to importing, US Customs recognizes three classes of numbers:

  • Social Security Number (SSN)
  • Employer Identification Number (EIN)
  • Customs Assigned Importer Number (CAIN)

Brokers require these to link your organization with your customs bondto one of these numbers. The customs bondwill be filed under your discrete ID number, allowing a broker to follow up with Customs if necessary.

Social Security Number (SSN)

The SSN is utilized for Customs and taxation purposes for US citizens and sole traders. SSNs apply only for goods imported into the US; they are not applicable for export.

Employer Identification Number (EIN)

The US Internal Revenue Service issues the EIN, also known as the Tax ID, for the purpose of tax administration. Every organization, partnership or LLC must hold an EIN. The only exception is a one-officer LLC, where either SSN or EIN can apply.

Customs Assigned Importer Number (CAIN)

Foreign importers with neither SSN nor EIN are issued a CAIN when managing the Customs bonds that are made when importing goods. We help organize CAINs for clients based outside the US, submitting the CBP Form 5106 on their behalf.

How to get a Customs Assigned Importer Number (CAIN)

To import goods into the US you must be recognized as a Foreign Importer of Record. This requires being assigned an Importer of Record number and a customs bond for your goods. To get this number you will need to give your customs broker a number of documents.

Customs Power of Attorney

This document, which your broker will give you, must be signed by two officers of your organization.

Articles of Incorporation

Copy of your organization’s Articles of Incorporation.

Power of Attorney

Proof the officers have authority to sign the Power of Attorney.

Proof of identification

Scans or photos of the signatories’ IDs.

When all of these are submitted to the broker, they can proceed to request, on your behalf, a CAIN enabling you to obtain a customs bond. With that and the necessary import documentation, you will then be able to bring your goods into the US.

Note: The receiver of your goods does not require a customs bond, but must have a US address and Tax ID number.

As an importer of record in any country, bear in mind that you are answerable for all relevant compliance. For example, you must ensure your goods are registered with, and all paperwork completed for any and all relevant regulatory bodies.

Your while broker can assist with getting a CAIN so you can import, the compliance of your goods is strictly your responsibility.
