Five essential things for fast and easy customs clearance
Clearing your goods into a US sea or air port is not as easy as it may seem. You need to be as prepared as possible. Thus, we give you these five important tips to ensure that your customs clearance and delivery will be super fast and easy.
Get your “Commercial Invoice”
Looks quite simple, right? But you just don’t know how many first time importers fail to provide this important document to us.
Don’t make the same mistake. Make sure you have your commercial invoice ready. In case you are unfamiliar with it, then it is the document that contains the following:
- Your product
- Its manufacturer
- Place of origin
- HTS code

Organise your “Power of Attorney”
There’s nothing to be scared of here. You are not getting into any legal claims or disputes. We just need it so we can classify, clear and pay duty for your goods on your behalf. It simply authorizes us to act as your broker, who has power to manage the import and customs clearance process for you – no more no less.

Have ready the “Airway Bill” or “Bill of lading and Arrival Notice”
You’re doing great. You’ve got two of the most important documents we need. Let’s move forward by showing you the remaining documents you need to provide us.
So how do we know your cargo has safely been boarded on the ship or on the plane? It is through the “boarding pass”, also referred to as “Airway bill” or “Bill of lading.”
This comes from your sea or air carrier and is another important document you need to send to us. It signals us that, yes, the cargo is in movement. Very soon, you’ll be receiving an “Arrival Notice” which has to be pitched back to us as it notifies us that your goods have arrived at the sea or airport and is ready to begin clearance.
Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) code
You’re almost done! But not to hurry, because the tricky part comes last – harmonised tariff code. We simplify this by locating the HS Code with your full description of your product.

ISF (Importer Security Filing) for sea freight made simple
Hang-on! There is just one more document you need to complete to finally clear your goods through US Customs – the “Importer Security Filing” (ISF).
Why do you need to complete this?
“Importer Security Filing” (ISF) to US Customs is mandatory for cargo being imported into the US. An ISF Filing lets US Customs know before the shipment enters the United States who is importing goods and shipping the goods and what the goods are. They need it for security and accountability reasons.
When do you need to send it?
ISF must be sent to US Customs by the Importer or their agent (licensed customs broker) before the goods arrive (ahead of time). Specific information on the cargo is sent electronically and only applies to cargo being imported to the US by vessel. This process does not apply to cargo arriving by air freight.

Data needed for ISF filing
Now, we just need to get some information from. It’s not about your age, so just stay calm.
Importers have a certain amount of flexibility with the data being submitted for ISF. Two pieces of information must be submitted as early as possible and these are:
- Container stuffing location
For the remaining pieces of information, a range of reasonable answers based what was known at the time of submission may be given. However, the ISF must be updated as soon as more precise data arises. The last update can be made no later than 24 hours prior to the vessel arriving at a US port. These pieces of information are:
- Seller and Buyer
- Record number on importer
- Identification number
- Consignee number(s)
- Manufacturer or supplier
- Country of origin
- Ship to party
- Commodity Harmonized Tariff Schedule
- US (HTSUS) Number
